Hernia: Symptoms & Treatment

hernia is a condition in which intra-abdominal viscera, or more frequently parts of them, prolapse
and protrude out of their usual anatomic position through a natural or pathological opening.

The protrusion is easily perceived by the patient as a lump, which can easily be pushed back inside at the beginning. If the contents of the hernia cannot be returned to their cavity, then we have an incarcerated hernia, which requires immediate surgery due to imminent intestinal ischemia and necrosis.

In such a case, patients should undergo surgery within maximum six hours after the symptoms appear. Otherwise, they may run the risk of life-threatening peritonitis, or they may need to have parts of the intestine (that have been necrosed) removed.

Several factors and conditions, alone or combined, favour hernia development.

The following are the most important ones:

• Congenital predisposition (many times during birth).
• A disorder in the balance of collagen composition – degradation (advanced age, undernourishment or malnutrition)
• Conditions that increase pressure in the abdomen (obesity, chronic cough, constipation, multiple births, heavy manual labour).
• Traumas and/or surgical incisions (as they cause weakening of the walls along the scars, and innervation disorders in areas near the trauma).
